CHURCH OF
CONCEPTUAL ART
COCAUSA.ORG
A statement of doctrine, purpose, and jurisdiction.
ALWAYS COCA.
01/WHY WE EXIST
A Last Resort
The Church of Conceptual Art did not choose to exist. It arrived as a structural necessity.
Something that used to live in cathedrals moved into advertising agencies and no one said anything. Something that used to organize communities around the sacred reorganized them around the quarterly report and called it culture. The re-religification of the secular was not a creative decision. It was the only honest response to what had already happened.
CoCA is not restoring what was lost. Eden, the Dharma, the Tao -- these are valid maps of the same territory. The territory is the human need to locate the divine in the material. CoCA is not adding a new map. It is pointing out that the map you are already using was drawn by a corporation.
This is not a critique. A critique stands outside the system and points. CoCA operates inside the system and makes it visible by doing exactly what the system does, honestly.
02/BRAND AS COMMUNION
The Corporate Sacred
Brand is communion. The logo is a totem. The mission statement is a prayer that has forgotten it is one.
Corporate culture is every great thinker, every mystic, every poet -- distilled, sanitized, and operationalized. The Tao Te Ching became a leadership framework. The Sermon on the Mount became a values document. The I Ching became a decision matrix. CoCA did not invent this. CoCA named it.
The entertainment industry has always known what it is selling. The product is not the music, the film, the object. It is the managed release of human desire at a price point the market has already set. Most artists lose this negotiation before they understand it has started. CoCA exists to change the terms.
Corporate realism is every great thinker reduced to a bullet point. CoCA is the bullet point that knows what it is.
03/ETHICS
Congruence, Not Goodness
CoCA does not make the world a better place. CoCA makes better fiction.
Good is not what improves conditions. Good is what illuminates what is. The resale covenant does not reform the art market. It reveals what the art market has always been: a system of agreed-upon fictions governing the transfer of value between people who believe in them. CoCA simply made the fiction legally binding and named it honestly.
Ethics, for CoCA, is congruence. As above, so below -- except the banks got there first, and so now us. We are ethical because we do not pretend the fiction is fact. We make the fiction and sign our name to it.
The artist resale royalty has existed in Europe for decades and been ignored in America because it depended on goodwill. The covenant depends on a signature. That is the only ethical claim being made. Not that this is good. That this is honest.
We are ethical because we are congruent. Big bank take little bank. And so now us.
04/THE MECHANISM
The Covenant Is the Work
The Genesis Artifact is an unlicensed Canal Street Rolex, purchased for $200, permanently encased in archival resin, still ticking, governed by a covenant that runs with the object forever.
It is not a watch. It is a compliance mechanism dressed as a relic. It works the same way a baptism works. The water is ordinary. The document changes the jurisdiction.
Every acquisition is governed by a permanent resale covenant requiring 50% of any future sale to remit to the artists. This is not an artist resale royalty scheme. Those depend on secondary market infrastructure, jurisdiction, and goodwill. This covenant is built into the acquisition document itself. It runs with the object. It cannot be severed.
The concept is the divine act. The institution precedes the work. We didn't make an object. We changed the jurisdiction.
05/THE LINEAGE
The Founding Asset
Paul Pissarro is the great-great-grandson of Camille Pissarro, who restructured the relationship between artists and institutions in 1874 by deciding the existing ones wouldn't have him and building his own. The lineage is not decorative. It is the founding asset.
Jesse Do is a former Google and Capital One engineer who built CoCA's entire technology infrastructure, artist statement in eight languages, and the DIET COKE oracle a proprietary AI system structured on the I Ching and CoCA doctrine.
Together they operate as a single conceptual entity. The institution they built does not depend on the art world's permission to exist. That is also the point.
The covenant runs with the object. It cannot be undone. Always CoCA.
